The Green Mus= ic Center, a $110 million project, joins a long list of premier Bay Area cultu= ral institutions supported by Koret, including San Francisco's new California Academy of Sci= ences, the M. H. de Young Museum, and the Palace of Fine Arts. The Sonoma State University grant will be acknowledged with the naming of t= he Koret Entry Plaza at the Green Music Center. "In the San Francisco Bay Area, Koret adds to the region's vitality in part= by contributing to a diverse cultural landscape," said Koret Board President Tad Taube. "A = cultural gem like the Green Music Center helps vitalize the local economy, and so is= a particularly important project during these challenging economic times." Foundation Awards $500,000= =20
 
The= Koret Foundation has awarded a $500,000 capital grant to Sonoma State Univ= ersity for construction of the Donald & Maureen Green Music Center.  T= he Green Music Center, a $110 million project, joins a long list of premier= Bay Area cultural institutions supported by Koret, including San Francisco= 's new California Academy of Sciences, the M. H. de Young Museum, and the P= alace of Fine Arts.
 
The Sonoma State University grant will be acknowledged wit= h the naming of the Koret Entry Plaza at the Green Music Center.
"In t= he San Francisco Bay Area, Koret adds to the region's vitality in part by c= ontributing to a diverse cultural landscape," said Koret Board President Ta= d Taube. "A cultural gem like the Green Music Center helps vitalize the loc= al economy, and so is a particularly important project during these challen= ging economic times."
 
Expected to be one of the best concert venues in the world= , the GMC was designed by William Rawn, architect for Ozawa Hall at Tanglew= ood in Massachusetts, which the Boston Symphony Orchestra calls home. Ozawa Hall's acoustician Larry Kirkegaard was hir= ed to ensure that the acoustics of the GMC match the level of excellence of= Ozawa and other outstanding concert halls throughout the world.
 
"The San Francisco Opera applauds Sonoma State and its com= munity for building a concert facility of the quality of the Green Music Ce= nter. We hope to have the opportunity to perform in this wonderful venue," = said San Francisco Opera General Director David Gockley.

SSU's Center= for Performing Arts presents Fat Pig in the Evert B. Person Theatre. = The play follows a man named Tom who hits it off with a woman named Helen,= and who happens to be a touch large. This doesn't sit well with Tom's frie= nds, Carter and Jeannie, who are sometimes sage, sometimes stupid, almost a= lways nasty. How much has our relentless pursuit of beauty turned us into a= n uglier species? Does love need society's blessing to be complete? <= /div>
 
The play was written by Nicholas Bute and is directed by T= ori Truss. STAR Wins Prestigious= Journalism Award
 
The Sonoma State STAR ha= s received a Best News Series award from the California College Media Assoc= iation, the banner organization for college and university media throughout= the state, beating out University of California, San Diego.

The award was given for a series of news stori= es written during the Fall 2008 semester on the 16-unit registration cap. T= he articles were written by then news editor Jessica Anderson, co-news edit= or Stephanie Harris and columnist Eva Oliver.

"I am extremely proud of the superior work and= effort that went into putting that series of articles together," said Chip= McAuley, STAR advisor. "Jessica, Stephanie and Eva really pounded the pave= ment and produced some top-quality journalism on a topic of extreme relevan= ce to students that sets the standard for news excellence. This is our miss= ion at the STAR, and I am glad they are being celebrated for their fine wor= k."
EOP Hosts 40th Anniversary = Reunion
The Educational Opportunity Program in Califor= nia is celebrating its 40th Anniversary! EOP is inviting all former Sonoma = State EOP students, as well as those known as "friends of EOP" and their fa= milies, to a celebration reunion on Sunday, May 3. 
 
The program will officially begin at 1 p.m. wi= th an Opening Ceremony at the Commons, but "pre-conference" activities will= begin at 10 a.m. for those who arrive early.  Festivities for the day= will include games, activities and focus groups, a talent show and raffle,= the EOP and Learning Skills Services Dinner, as well as many other fun eve= nts and programs.

The Alumni Association is accepting nominations for i= ts 2009 Distinguished Alumni
Awards.  Established in 1987 to recognize the ou= tstanding professional and personal
achievements of SSU graduates, the Distinguished Alum= ni Awards are the highest honor
bestowed upon SSU alumni by the Alumni Association.
 
Nominees will be evaluated by several criteria includ= ing:  contributions benefiting
the community, state or nation; humanitarian services= and contributions to society;
services to the University; and career or one-time wo= rthy activity.
