In January, Glasmeier took over the longest-running continuous planning program in the United States, repeatedly ranked #1 in the nation. She is the twelfth department head since the program was established in 1933 and the first woman to lead what is now the largest planning faculty in the US, possibly in the world. In a unique move, the Gappas hope the fund will attract a large community of enthusiastic supporters and donors who want to help these students manage the increasing costs of a four-year college education. The Gappas have made an original donation of two yearly scholarships. These scholarships would be continued annually for four years as long as the recipients make satisfactory progress towards their degrees. The heart of the program is to help young people with academic potential develop it through a university education. "We can think of no better way to ensure a bright future for the region than to help its youth achieve university degrees that prepare them for careers and community leadership locally," say the couple. "Just as we both have benefited greatly from our education, we believe that others can also, " say the Gappas. "Unfortunately, many of the students with great academic potential do not have the opportunity to take advantage of it. Their loss is the community's loss." The artists will use everyday materials, sound, light and juxtaposition to build a site specific, large scale installation. The storefront retail space at 519 Mendocino Ave. will be transformed to address the show's theme: Community, Connections and Divisions in a Consumer Culture. The show is hosted by the Phantom Gallery, a program of the Santa Rosa Recreation and Parks Department. The Phantom Gallery accepts proposals for art shows on an ongoing basis. The SSU students saw the Phantom Gallery program as a unique opportunity to participate in Santa Rosa's downtown arts district and forge connections with Sonoma County's local arts community beyond the SSU campus. Alumni Association= Calls for 2009 Distinguished Alumni Nominations
 
The Alumni Association is accepting nominations for i= ts 2009 Distinguished Alumni
Awards.  Established in 1987 to recognize the ou= tstanding professional and personal
achievements of SSU graduates, the Distinguished Alum= ni Awards are the highest honor
bestowed upon SSU alumni by the Alumni Association.
 
Nominees will be evaluated by several criteria includ= ing:  contributions benefiting
the community, state or nation; humanitarian services= and contributions to society;
services to the University; and career or one-time wo= rthy activity.
 
Nomination deadline is April 10, 2009.  The nomi= nation form can be downloaded
from the Alumni Association website at www.ssualumn= i.org.  Submit the form and =
