SSU Professor Meets with Obama Team
"...important opportunity to represent SSU and our community."
Poverty, welfare, low-income families, and access to higher education were the issues
that Sonoma State University Sociology Professor Sheila Katz discussed at a meeting
with President-Elect Barack Obama's transition team at the Realizing the Promise
Forum in Washington, D.C. She also met with members of Congress and their legislative

Alumni Give Back at Student

Networking Event

The first Career and Internship EXPO for business and economics students was held
in October. The Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce co-sponsored the event with SSU's
School of Business and Economics' CAP (Center for Advising and Placement) with
help from members of the Finance Club and the Business and Economics FIG (Freshman
Interest Group). Corporate sponsors were Dry Creek Rancheria, Enterprise Rent-a-Car,
Aflac, Lilly, and Exchange Bank.
Over 200 students attended the evening EXPO to network with 20 local and national
employers. Resume Folders were delivered to employers a week before the event.
Employers contacted students before the EXPO to encourage them to stop by their
tables to talk specifically about job or internship openings.
Students polished their resumes in September workshops with the assistance of Human
Resources representatives from 12 local employers.
CAP welcomed many alumni back to the EXPO and the workshops. Students appreciated
the opportunity to interact with alumni with whom they feel an instant connection.
CAP looks forward to a steady growth of alumni involvement as they build extra-curricular
activities for business and economics students.
To find out how you can join SBE CAP efforts, the CAP Coordinator at 664-2548 or

Memorial Grove Set For Spring Dedication
Place to honor survivors, rescuers, educators

Genocide memorials have sprung up all over the world. None are as distinctive as
the one being built by the lake on the east side of the SSU campus.

The Holocaust and Genocide Memorial Grove, is a result of the joint efforts of the
Dean of Social Sciences, Dr. Elaine Leeder, Director for the Center of the Holocaust
and Genocide, Dr. Myrna Goodman, Treasurer for the Alliance for Study of the Holocaust
and major donor David Salm, Associate Professor of Sculpture, Jann Nunn, and countless
donors and supporters of the Center and its lecture series over the last 26 years.
The Memorial Grove will be a multi-genocidal monument which will honor and memorialize
the lives lost as a result of genocide, beginning with the Native American Genocide
continuing through to present day Darfur. It is also a place to honor survivors,
rescuers, educators, peace activists and human rights advocates all over the world.
Created by Associate Professor of Sculpture Jann Nunn, the sculpture's design consists
of two 40-foot-long railroad tracks, imbedded into the lawn. The converging steel
lines meet at a ten-foot tall glass tower, which will be internally illuminated
from dawn to dusk. Five hundred and twenty ivory colored memorial bricks will be
placed as railroad ties, and will be laser-inscribed with selected genocide symbols,
names, and personal expressions. The symbols that have been chosen are compelling
visual representations for many participant groups, including Armenians, Cambodians,
Native American, Rwandans, and those from the Holocaust.
The sculpture is scheduled for dedication in April or May of 2009. View movie
highlighting the project. [http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=s6oqjucab.0.0.umgk9tcab.0&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sonoma.edu%2Fholocaust%2Fcenter.htm&id=preview]

Big Turnout for Graves Tribute

More than 450 people flooded Ives Hall on Sun., Nov. 9 for a musical tribute to
SSU Professor Mel Graves. Colleagues, friends, musicians from many generations,
former students and jazz enthusiasts packed Warren Auditorium. The hallways of Ives
were full of people wanting to hear the music and be part of the tribute.
Mel had been battling inoperable pancreatic cancer for the last five months. His
battle ended on Saturday morning, Nov. 8. The "Movin' On" Tribute concert, in some
respects, turned into a Celebration of a Life for an individual who touched so many
lives.
Old friends Mel Martin, Denny Zeitlin and Art Lande were there for him. His jazz
colleagues at the University, George Marsh, Randy Vincent and Bob Afifi would not
have been in any other place. Former jazz students came from near and far. The
performances began with a set performed by the Sonoma State University All-Star
Alumni Band made up of Noam Lemish (BA Music, '87), Matt Rothstein (BA Music, '05)
Miles Wick, Alex Aspinall (BA Music, '02) and Afifi.
The evening was filled with music from generations of jazz artists who all had one
common link-their love for a fellow musician, Mel Graves. "Mel would have been thrilled.
The music went late, the crowd was appreciative and the evening felt more like one
great musical experience then anything sad or sorrowful. Just the way Mel would
have preferred," says Alan Kleinschmidt of the Center for Performing Arts.

Basketball Season Kicks Off

with Logsdon Classic
Sonoma State men's basketball opened up the regular season
November 21st when they hosted Northwest Nazarene and Menlo College as part of the
Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic in Rohnert Park.
The annual SSU event was established in memory of Ron Logsdon (BA History, '68)
A program developer in the Career Center for 18 years, Logsdon was an avid supporter
of the SSU basketball program and a positive influence on many of the players over
the years. In 1973 he was elected to the Alumni Association Board of Directors
and gave an enormous amount of time and energy to assist with the Association's
operations. Logsdon became the Board president in 1998 and helped strengthen the
connection between the Association and the University.
"Ron was my good friend and he was an inspiration to all of us," says Basketball
Coach Pat Fuscaldo who established the event. "It was an honor to name the tournament
in his memory. I miss his friendship, his strength his courage and his smile. The
tournament is a way of keeping his memory alive in our hearts and in our thoughts,
and I think he would be delighted to know that his legacy will be preserved through
this tournament."

Former BBall Stars Take to the Mike
Seawolf Sports Network Debuts

The Sonoma State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announces the
creation of the Seawolf Sports Network. The network begins with live online audio/video
coverage of Sonoma State men's and women's basketball games.
Through UStream.tv, the department will be video streaming all home basketball games,
meaning fans from Rohnert Park to Russia (and all spots in between) will be able
to follow the Seawolves in real time.
"The creation of the Seawolf Sports Network makes our home athletic events available
to a worldwide audience and allows Sonoma State alumni, parents, prospective students,
and fans of Seawolf athletics the opportunity to follow their favorite teams at
an unprecedented level," said Sonoma State Associate Athletic Director Brandon Bronzan
(2001, BS Business Management).
The department is also excited to announce that former men's basketball stars Kevin
Christensen (BA History, 2006) and Vince Inglima (BS Computer Science, 2008) will
be providing the play-by-play and analysis all season long. The duo were instrumental
in leading Sonoma State to the CCAA Championship in 2006 and both have played professionally
overseas.
"I don't think we could have found two better ambassadors for Sonoma State athletics,"
said Bronzan. "Their passion for the Seawolves coupled with their basketball expertise
and sense of humor add up to one very entertaining broadcast."
Says Christensen, "It's an absolute honor to be part of such a groundbreaking network.
We bleed Seawolf blue and are excited to contribute to the basketball program and
athletics department that we love so much. We know fans will love the insight,
commentary, and analysis that only two former SSU student-athletes can give."
Added Inglima, "Much of my success in life has been due to my ability to hitch my
wagon to the right horse at the right time. I'm very excited to be working with
such a good friend and naturally gifted sportscaster as Kevin. Sonoma State athletics
has been a big part of our lives and it is a pleasure to have the opportunity for
continued involvement with the program."
The dynamic duo of the Birdman (Christensen) and Mr. V (Inglima) will be filling
the announcing shoes of Ronnie Wald, who did audio of a partial SSU schedule for
the past couple of years.
Commented Christensen, "Buckle up because it's going to be a fast paced and entertaining
season for all involved!"
Though only basketball broadcasts have been scheduled so far, the Seawolf Sports
Network will also branch out into baseball and softball this spring.
